Project Description

Slave Chambers and Coral Cave in Mangapwani

After the spice tour in Kizimbani, a horse ride in Kama, a short visit to the Sultan Persian Bath in Kidichi or a walk through the Masingini Natural Forest Reserve in Bububu, you can head to Mangapwani Beach. It’s an amazing spot during high tide to enjoy the sunset. Not far from the beach you can explore the Coral cave and visit the Slave chambers.

Following the abolition of the slave trade in town, this cave was thought to have been used by illegal traders to hide their slaves before sending them away through the tunnel to awaiting pirate ships. Now it is possible to explore the cave up to the sea with a local guide.

The nearby Slave Chambers, however, were specially constructed underground for holding slaves prior to transportation, over one hundred slaves would have been packed, awaiting the arrival of the merchant ships to transport them away.
