Horse riding in Kama

Only a few minutes drive from Chuini live a South African couple who manage a horse stable. They are qualified instructors for riders of all levels with friendly horses. You can enjoy an hour long beach ride or a beachfront ride during high tide.  Fancy a sunset ride?

Batik and Soap Workshop

In the neighbouring village of Bububu, once famous for the train, Mussa can assist you to create your own batik fabric, or maybe a tablecloth, sarong, scarf, cushion cover… First draw your pattern with a pencil and then a home-made small brush dipped in hot wax will help you to make your masterpiece! Dye your fabric as you like and as many times as you like. Just be patient, let it dry! At Mussa’s workplace you will also be able to make your own natural soap with spices, like cinnamon, cloves or lemongrass.

Cooking Lesson

We can combine the spice tour at the spice farm with a cooking class on site or simply organise a cooking class by itself at the lodge. You will work with the ladies from our kitchen and learn how to cook the local spiced rice and coconut curries, or practise with chapati, sambusa and kaimati. You will pick your favourite dish from our menu and prepare it with our cooks at the barbecue site and, at the end, you can sit down and eat your tasty meal!aiding.

Local Fishing

A night time or early morning fishing game can be organised with captains from the village. Your fishing adventure can start anywhere from 2am to 5am according to the tide. This will be a true local experience as you set out with the fisherman in his ngalawa (a canoe shaped boat with arms), with only a simple line. You will find a variety of small and medium sized fish.

Sunset Dhow Cruise

Start your journey in a traditional dhow boat from Forodhani garden on the seafront of Stone Town, and sail along the shore of the historical and fascinating coast as you watch the sun sink into the Indian ocean. Enjoy a different view of the town as you sip on a drink and soak up the atmosphere.

Bike Riding

A leisurely and more personal way to see the village or villages is to hop on two wheels and explore the countryside. A ride to the spice farm takes 45 minutes and goes through the beautiful back streets where you can see people in their local environment. Otherwise, explore the surrounding villages, Kama and Mangapwani which are a bit further away, but it all depends on your legs.  

Music workshop

For music lovers while in Stone Town, we highly recommend an introduction to the beauty of traditional Zanzibari music at the Dhow Music Academy. Listen and learn about local and classical arabic styles such as Taraab, Ngoma and Kidumbak.  Experience the instruments for yourself as you drum, dance and have a good time.

Massage, Scrub, Henna & Hair-braiding

If you want to treat yourself, a local four-hands massage is for you. Homemade coconut oil and few drops of your favourite essential oil is the simple but perfect combination for your relaxation. Local brides use clove powder mixed with coconut to soften their skin on their special day, and you too can try the complete local, wedding experience with traditional henna tattoo and hair-braiding.
